The BlueDotBuddies project aims to create a safe, confidential digital haven for Democratic voters residing in predominantly Republican states (Blue Dots in Red States). By establishing a dedicated website and Discord server, we aim to foster a sense of community, facilitate connection, and provide a platform for shared experiences and mutual support. Furthermore, the BlueDotBuddies project will facilitate Democratic voters in Blue states to provide support, encouragement and resources to the Blue Dots.
Democratic voters in Republican-majority states often experience feelings of isolation and marginalization. Limited opportunities for meaningful engagement with like-minded individuals can lead to disengagement, disillusionment and ultimately, apathy. BlueDotBuddies seeks to address this issue by creating a virtual space where these voters can connect, share their experiences, find solidarity and potentially plan action.

- Empower & Catalyze Political Action & Resistance: First and foremost, the goal is to strengthen the nationwide resistance to the current political regime
- Build Community: Create a welcoming, safe and inclusive online community for Democratic voters in Republican states.
- Facilitate Connection: Provide a platform for members to connect with each other, share ideas, and build relationships, keep confidentiality in the hands of the users.
- Foster Engagement: Encourage active participation in the democratic process through discussion, information sharing, and mutual support.
- Amplify Voices: Empower members to feel heard and represented, despite being in the minority.
Who we are:
We are small but determined group of volunteers who aim to make a contribution to the cause of defending and promoting Democracy. This is not a revenue-generating project (we are all donating our time and expertise) and any modest expenses are paid out of pocket by the Founder, Dr. Steve Hickman. There is no expectation, but if you wish to make a modest donation to the cause via Venmo directly to Steve, it would be much appreciated.

Hi. I’m Dr. Steven Hickman (call me Steve – I stopped asking my family to call me Dr. Hickman about a year after getting my degree!). I’m a clinical psychologist by training, a recognized expert in the field of teaching and practicing mindfulness and compassion, and a passionate democratic activist by avocation. I am (mostly) retired and live on the central coast of Oregon in the city of Newport, where I proudly serve on the City Council. I am married to my soulmate, Shelley Wistar, and between us we have three grown children, plus two beloved Corgis who love to run on the beach, bark at everything and generally provide levity and joy to our lives.
